Active Travel Camps’ residential school trips are designed to teach new skills, nurture confidence and create friendships that last long after students arrive back home. They’ll navigate rapids, swing through tree-tops and take the plunge down waterfalls during a week of non-stop activity. There is no greater playground than nature, and there is no landscape more beautiful or diverse than that of the Ardèche, France.
No school is the same, so no trip is the same. The great outdoors is the main focus of any adventure holiday, but we’re built more nimble than most. If you want to explore history, we can carve out time to delve into the past; if culture is on the agenda, we can visit the theatres and amphitheatres that surround us. Whatever your needs, we’ll strive to reach them.
A two-day descent of the Ardèche river is the star of the show. Your group will canoe 30km through a beautiful limestone gorge, with eagles overhead and fish leaping below. You’ll pass through Pont d’Arc – a breathtaking natural bridge that serves as the gateway to the gorge. Groups will picnic by the riverside, brave big rock jumps and sleep out under the stars at a campsite nestled deep in the gorge after feasting on a huge barbecue.
A high-ropes course up in the mountains will see students sail, Tarzan-style, through the trees, while our canyoning run entails climbing, squeezing and leaping through narrow gorges and waterfalls. There will also be a visit to a stunning showcave filled with incredible rock formations and after that we’ll visit Grotte Chauvet, a UNESCO world heritage site displaying cave paintings that date back 36,000 years.
Our full-board accommodation is purpose built for young groups. It’s comfortable and robust, with dorm-stylebunkbeds. Set over 12-hectares, the centre also offers basketball courts, pétanque courts, table tennis tables, an open-air theatre and classrooms.
All meals are included, including breakfast and dinner at the centre and picnic lunches on activity days.
